Florida Hurricane Evacuation Issues and Regional Challenges

Author: Lance Winslow

One of the things which has always concerned me about Florida is its shape and the problems of evacuations, for instance if everyone has to leave the state the same way, same direction, go North. Yet once you get North there are not enough hotels left to stay in. And in the case of the Biggie (Large Category Hurricanes) or two potential Hurricanes coming back to back or side to side, then what do you do?

There are not enough places to make into temporary shelters and not enough hotels in AL, GA, SC to house everyone and not enough gasoline to fuel your car for everyone to leave at once? So then what learn to swim all of a sudden or jump on a boat on the opposite side and leave by water? Then if a biggie hits and the main freeways are out, how can you get everything such as relief efforts in? How can everyone get back home? And what is everyone suppose to do, live in their cars in the Wal-Mart parking lot in Valdosta, GA? I don't think so!

Many warn that these Hurricanes are nothing to mess around with and if you are asked to leave, you ought to evacuate as required by law to do so, not plan a Hurricane Party. Many of these folks who have lived through these Hurricanes make a really good point for storm chasers and thrill seekers when they say; "It ain't all it's cracked up to be!" Good advice there, no doubt about it. Being in the direct path of a Hurricane, any size is not funny, especially after CAT III it is could be your last. Florida is a tough state to defend against Mother Nature and this could be another whopper year indeed. Play it safe folks, we do not need you as a statistic. Consider this during the Hurricanes in 2006.
